Such a site generates sales by promoting corporate awareness rather than facilitating online transactions. Its function is similar to that of a brochure; it provides product or service information and contact information on how to proceed with the purchase. Because the site is often static and does not require the software systems necessary for online transactions, the site's design and maintenance are less expensive than the transaction site. The information delivery site is ideal for companies that market products and services that cannot be delivered online (e.g., Ford, Caterpillar).

The modified version of the site allows the purchaser to shop online at the best price from competing vendors offering the same product, such as authorized dealers in Honda America. Information on the options available for a particular model enables the purchaser to visualize the configuration and to obtain an estimated price for the vehicle.

Online Marketing or Auction Site

These sites are hosted platforms that bring together buyers and sellers to facilitate transactions. Participation in one of the sites often provides an efficient way to find a customer without the cost of building a proprietary transaction website. Site types include auctions (www.eBay.com), local crafts sites (www.etsy.com), retail and wholesale sites (www.Amazon.com and www.Alibaba.com), and matching services (www.buyusa.gov).

Online markets and auction sites are an excellent place to start e-commerce. However, the Department of Commerce recommends that a company explore its online store options before relying solely on such a marketplace and auction sites for its long-term e-commerce strategy.
